About the authors

Arlette Kouwenhoven (b. 1960) read cultural anthropology at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. She is currently working as a publisher at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. For years she was a free-lance writer, publishing articles on various subjects in newspapers and magazines worldwide. She has been visiting Madagascar since 1988 and regularly guided tours on the island.

Toussaint Raharison (b. 1948) read English at the University of Tananarive. He is managing director of a major tourist office in Tananarive and a free-lance photographer. He has produced numerous photographic series that have documented important traditional Malagasy ceremonies and festivals. He has exhibited in Madagascar, Reunion and Europe.
